Looking for a bold, sweet, and smoky twist on classic BBQ sauce? Enter the Haskap BBQ Sauce—a uniquely Northern blend that balances the tangy depth of haskap berries with rich maple syrup, chipotle heat, and a hint of garlic. This sauce is perfect for glazing grilled meats, marinating tofu, or serving as a dipping sauce. The haskaps lend a tart, blueberry-like punch that cuts through the richness of traditional barbecue flavors for something truly special.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup frozen haskap berries
- ½ cup ketchup
- ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
- ¼ cup water
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1½ tsp chipotle chili powder
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
Instructions:
- Simmer the base
In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the haskap berries, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, water, and minced garlic. Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. - Add seasoning
Once the mixture is bubbling, add the chipotle chili powder, brown sugar, and maple syrup. Stir well to combine. - Cook down the sauce
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 10–15 minutes, or until the berries have burst and the sauce has thickened slightly. Stir occasionally. - Blend until smooth
Remove the sauce from heat and allow it to cool slightly. Use an immersion blender or transfer to a countertop blender and puree until smooth. - Strain through cheesecloth
Place a piece of cheesecloth over a bowl or jar and pour the sauce through. Gather the corners of the cloth and gently squeeze to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the remaining pulp. - Final simmer (optional)
For a thicker consistency, return the strained sauce to the pan and simmer for another 5 minutes, stirring frequently. - Cool and store. Let the sauce cool completely.
